At their annual event, #VoteThatJawn encourages young people to register and vote!
Philadelphia, PA - (September 25, 2024) On Wednesday, October 16th, Philadelphia’s #VoteThatJawn Initiative is set to host its annual event, this year a Youth Vote Press Conference in the Mayor’s Reception Room in City Hall, located at 1400 John F. Kennedy Blvd. Taking place from 4:00 -6:45 PM, the event will let student reporters and leaders engage with city officials, youth-vote activists, and media professionals. Youth participants will be invited to flood social media with quotes, news, and scenes from the room in real time--and to leave with great non-partisan stories to take back to their student newspapers and school communities. The goal: to encourage and empower young voters as the upcoming election season approaches.
Attendees will hear from three panels throughout the evening--Philadelphia City Commissioners: Chair Omar Sabir and Commissioners Lisa Deeley and Seth Bluestein; student leaders, including Vivek Badu, former President of the Undergrads at Drexel University, and Ceci Schleinitz, PA Youth Vote representative at Temple University; journalists: Roxanne Shepelavy, Executive Editor of ThePhiladelphiaCitizen.org, Fallon Roth, Politics reporter at The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Kenny Cooper, multiplatform reporter at WHYY. Philly’s own 6ABC Anchor Rick Williams will close the event with his remarks.
“We want to make sure students are making educated, informed decisions and not just voting down partisan lines, or going on a whim.” says Vivek Badu. “We want to make sure they stay engaged in their communities and become proactive and politically engaged citizens.”
The event will also include live performances by Mad Beatz Philly drumline, Drexel’s Jazztet, refreshments by Philly mainstay, Brown’s Kitchen, and an interactive voter education station hosted by Jawn partner, Committee of 70.
"We want news about youth vote and a celebration of youth voters and activists to flood social media. At least for a day,” says Lorene Cary, founder and director of the #VoteThatJawn initiative. “When students engage directly with city leaders and media, they tell their story directly. There’s an urgency in the hope brings this amazing Gen Z cohort to the polls!
” The Youth Vote Press Conference will be live-streamed the day of on #VotethatJawn’s YouTube Channel and will feature short panels hosted by local elected officials, local student civic leaders, and professional journalists.
