No one outside of its residents had ever really heard of the small Mississippi town before June 1964. That’s when the stories began. Three young men, one of them a Black local and two of them white Northerners, gone missing. A county full of secrets and corruption. A police department mysteriously reluctant to work on the case. Even before the three bodies were eventually found, news outlets had given the town, Philadelphia, Mississippi, a name: “The Other Philadelphia.” Read more on votethatjawn.com

These hefty fees, known as poll taxes, were part of Jim Crow-era laws written to prevent Black American citizens from voting. Thanks to the 24th Amendment, which was passed in 1964, poll taxes are unconstitutional. Free the vote!

In my Tampa, Florida high school in 2016, I learned the hard way that voting wasn’t an excused absence. The line at the poll was long. When I arrived at school, I was sent to the school office where they put a new tardy mark on my record. Why, I wondered, couldn’t voting be an excused absence?

Now that I go to university here, I see that it can be. Philadelphia’s public school district is closed Nov. 3, so that Philadelphia high school students, and more than 18,000 teachers and staff can vote and volunteer. That’s certainly something to celebrate. But it’s time to think bigger.

Today is the 70th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education (1954).

In this historic civil rights case, the Court unanimously ruled that separating children in public schools on the basis of race is unconstitutional. Their decision marked the end of legalized racial segregation in schools across the country, overruling the “separate but equal” precedent set in the Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) case nearly 60 years prior.

Then and now, the Supreme Court’s decisions determine our rights as citizens. Any time we vote for President or Senators, our ballots can have a direct impact on the Supreme Court.
